My Visitor

This guy came out to see us at lunch time, just an ordinary Black snake they mean no harm to anyone. He must have decided that it was safe to venture out when the job site became quiet during lunch so I helped him on his way and moved him to a nearby field so he wouldn't be injured or killed.

Spring?

Well this might be considered a good sign to some. He sort of suprised me because I reached up there and its a dark corner of this basement and I felt his cold body, It was then I shined a flashlight up there and spotted him. I think he was just as startled as me. That was the last thing on my mind this early in the year I have never seen them out this time of year. Guess his sleep was cut short maybe from people working in the house. We took him outside and let him go and he slithered down a ground hog hole maybe to continue his sleep.

Misconceptions

I ran across this in the news and I had to put it in here,

I am glad all we have seen is harmless black snakes.



This is how I feel today just ready for the weekend to get here.

More of the Snake

Here is a video of the snake from the other day, he was moving sort of slow because it was cool in this basement. It amazes me of how well they can scale a wall the way they do.This one was not afraid of us at all, I will try and take them to safety if I am on a job site like this so they don't get killed or hurt due to the fact that if there is a black snake around chances are there are no copperheads in the area.

Suprise Visitor

Today we had another unexpected visitor at the old farm house. Just another black snake making his rounds. We are guessing they are coming out due to the fact we put some HID temporary lights in the basement and attic and they give off UV rays and a lot of heat.















They are kind of interesting to watch they can stretch across a large distance and are pretty fast. We have seen about 15 black snakes on this job since we started. We didn't see this one stretched out flat but I am guessing it was about 5 feet long.

Unexpected Guest

Today we worked at the old farmhouse again and one of the carpenters was yelling about something so we went to see what it was.Just a simple black snake looking for food I would guess.I just picked him up and moved him aside so he wouldn't get run over in the driveway and off he went about his business.this picture was the actual snake mentioned.

Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta)

The Black Rat Snake is one of several subspecies of Rat Snakes (Yellow and Gray Rat Snakes are others). Rat Snakes are common throughout the eastern U.S., although the black subspecies of rat snake does not occur in Florida. This snake can be quite large (it may exceed six feet in length) and has slightly keeled scales (raised ridge along the middle of each scale) that make it appear somewhat rough. Its back is almost entirely black (small flecks of whitish color may show through the black), whereas its chin and belly have a lot of white markings. Black Rat Snakes are excellent climbers and are found in a great variety of habitats, ranging from pine forests to agricultural fields. They feed primarily on rodents, birds and birds' eggs.



The snake did finally find its way to an old barn in its attempt to get away from us.
