Mounting A CT Cabinet

Today we mounted the CT cabinet on the wall and drove our ground rods. All we need now is the distribution panel then we can get our inspections in order to get power turned on. This location for the service would not have been my choice, however the power company whom has the final say are the ones who choose this location due to its proximity to their pole.

If you have been following my blog I had posted about ARC Flash on 10-4-08. Today we talked about what we are required to do. As far as what myself It looks as though I need to get a new set of hand tools rated for 1000 volts our company
provides everything else.

Back To The Service

Well today I had to go and pick up our CT cabinet we have been waiting for for almost 2 months now. There really isn't a whole lot to a CT cabinet.
The Ct is a Current Transformer, The current transformer safely isolates measurement and control circuitry from the high voltages typically present on the circuit being measured. This installation is 1000 amps that is why we needed the ct cabinet.

This is a typical wiring diagram of a CT cabinet, it is pretty close to the one we have. This is the biggest residential service I have ever built, a few years back we did install a 800 amp service and I had thought that was huge at the time. Yesterday I was sort of short with my blog due to working late and all, we had to replace a 1000' pull of wire between the local mall and the pump station that houses all of the sprinkler pumps for the mall. Then once we got the wire in we had to determine what the former electricians had done since none of the 16 wires were labeled correctly or even the same on both ends.

Home Sick Again

First off for anyone who doesn't know I am originally from upstate NY transplanted into the Panhandle region of WV due to work. Well today we worked over so I wasn't really up to speed with snowfall amounts up there however when I got home I had some email this link and this picture was in there, The first snowfall is always the best I always got excited about it, then usually by December that had worn off. I will be going up for Thanksgiving hope to spend a few days on my 4 wheeler if the snow isnt to deep.

Electricians nightmare

We are about to come to a standstill on the old farmhouse. About a month ago I ordered a MDP, In layman's terms that's an electrical panel just very large. anyhow they said it was shipping on Oct 23rd. OK not a problem It comes from Pennsylvania so I figured I would have it early this week. Well today I found out nobody knows where it is. I asked our purchasing agent if they sent it by horse due to high gas prices, he didn't find much humor in that. I hate when this sort of thing happens because I will get put to another job site and start that job then have two jobs half done. I just like to finish one job before moving on to the next.

Just Another Monday

Well it was a nice day a little cool but otherwise nice, It did decide to rain for about a half hour after dark. I have been getting really upset with the way people have been driving lately. I guess as I get older I notice more things. today in about 15 miles of driving there were more people who didn't use their signal lights than I care to count. Now if that was me who did than I would probably get a ticket with my luck.

Browser Poll

I have decided to take the browser poll down after 16 days. I think the votes were some what weighted (sort of reminds me of the election) I don't think there is anything preventing someone from voting more than once in the poll I used. I have been watching my feedburner stats also and see there are more IE users than I thought however there are not as many using Vista as I would have expected.

Electric Meter

A while back a contractor I know was telling me a story of how he ran across a fellow whom was trying to save himself some money by re-attaching his 400 amp meter socket to his home. From what I was told someone struck the meter on his garage and it was falling off the building so he cut the tab and opened the meter (BIG NO NO) anyhow the contractor told him he should contact the local power co. and let them repair it. Well he decided he didn't need to for whatever reason and while he was putting the lag bolts back into it he dropped something and it went across the lugs and sent him flying a@@ over teakettle. What surprised me is he is still alive to tell about it however I believe he knocked power out to his home and then probably had a lot of explaining to do with the power co, and possibly some fines. This picture is only an example.

If you are not an electrician DO not mess with the meter #1 it will kill you, if it doesn't kill you the next time the meter reader comes to get a reading and they notice the little tab has been cut they will probably cut your power or fine you. If they do cut your power it will probably be quite some time and a lot of explaining to get it turned back on. So if your meter needs repaired call an Electrician or your local power co.
